Roman Polanski raped a child. Let’s just start right there, because that’s the detail that tends to get neglected when we start discussing whether it was fair for the bail-jumping director to be arrested at age 76, after 32 years in “exile” (which in this case means owning multiple homes in Europe, continuing to work as a director, marrying and fathering two children, even winning an Oscar, but never — poor baby — being able to return to the U.S.). Let’s keep in mind that Roman Polanski gave a 13-year-old girl a Quaalude and champagne, then raped her, before we start discussing whether the victim looked older than her 13 years, or that she now says she’d rather not see him prosecuted because she can’t stand the media attention. Before we discuss how awesome his movies are or what the now-deceased judge did wrong at his trial, let’s take a moment to recall that according to the victim’s grand jury testimony, Roman Polanski instructed her to get into a jacuzzi naked, refused to take her home when she begged to go, began kissing her even though she said no and asked him to stop; performed cunnilingus on her as she said no and asked him to stop; put his penis in her vagina as she said no and asked him to stop; asked if he could penetrate her anally, to which she replied, “No,” then went ahead and did it anyway, until he had an orgasm.
Can we do that? Can we take a moment to think about all that, and about the fact that Polanski pled guilty to unlawful sex with a minor, before we start talking about what a victim he is? Because that would be great, and not nearly enough people seem to be doing it.
When are Pedobear and Kanye going to fuck with Polanski, he is infringing on their territory.
How about we take a moment to contemplate how no one fucking gave a damn before last week. In fact I think I’ve heard people sing praises of Polanski’s movies on this here tumblr site. So if you wanna be upset with the fact that Roman Polanski raped a girl 32 years ago (and I’m not even going to go into my personal feelings on this subject) then how about you go and edit your years of interaction and stick by that girl for the last 32 years, not just today.
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut — A skull fragment thought to come from Adolf Hitler is in fact that of an unidentified woman, according to a US study that has resurrected questions about the Nazi leader’s death.
The bone, bearing a bullet hole, has been held up to support the theory that Hitler shot himself and took cyanide in his Berlin bunker as Soviet troops approached in April 1945.
Doubts about the chain of events — and even speculation that Hitler got away — have persisted for decades.
Big news from Your Daily 90s HQ! One Mister Tyler Coates™ has agreed to guest edit this week, leaving me free to post songs that don’t involve flannel and angst.
Holy shit, I have always loved this song. I remember latching onto this back in high school, favoring it more than “Possum Kingdom” on the Toadies’ album. The song is ridiculously easy to play musically, hence my “band” at the time performing it at a few “shows.” High school musicianship is really laughable and has to therefore always be referred to quote marks. This song always spoke, in a very scary way, to a very scary dark park of myself that, especially in high school, felt that it very definitely needed to be taken out and flexed every now and then. Listen to it and you’ll see what I mean. Listen to the first verse. And then listen to the second verse. There is something very wrong going on there, but it was so catchy to me at the time.
You know, I’m a fan of the man’s movies. A big fan, I guess you could say. You’ll see me talk about how much I like them. I’ll praise some of his creative spirit and instincts. That said, if there was an alternate universe where a lot of his movies in the last few decades had never ever existed because he had actually served his jail time as a convicted child rapist, I’d be okay with that. That’s not something you can get around or defend. I haven’t seen that Wanted And Desired documentary and I don’t know all the details of the case, and I’m curious about them, just haven’t gotten around to it, but I also fully understand the victim not wanting to see Polanski go to jail because of the level of media scrutiny it’ll bring upon her. I can fully understand that she’s already tired of having it come back her way every few years. That doesn’t make what he did any less horrible and that doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t be have to pay for his crime as society and the law sees fit.
Still in a 90s musical flashback mode, minus the brief Hall & Oates asides.
Anyway, two youtube clips I’d like to post, but of course some record label things that embedding these videos would be bad, so… no. And the live versions available are shit. Sigh. I’ll never understand how the question of to embed or not embed streaming video on a free website hacks into potential profit for artists that are, quite frankly, probably through generating profit in any kind of real way. Oh well.
1. Veruca Salt “Number One Blind.” Posted a video by Veruca Salt before, but I’ve always really liked this song quite a bit more. It’s just so catchy, so 90s.
2. Tracy Bonham “The One.” Of course you heard “Mother Mother" back in the day, but you know what? Again, I just like this song so much better. And for the same reason as the Veruca Salt: It’s just so catchy, so 90s.
I’d never go so far as to say that the 90s were a better time or place, because that’s just not true at all, but I have to say I’ve been blinded by my nostalgia for that decade quite a bit more lately.
