Middle of the night, can’t sleep, all alone. So, if I’m not reading or writing, my brain usually goes to two familiar other haunts: music and film. There’s certainly other very familiar haunts, but these two are safe for public consumption and less scandalous…
Some points:
1. Vertigo is my favorite film. Top 5s are tough for me, but it almost always perched right at the top. It is a height that I keep falling from.
2. Here’s pretentiousness for you: Taking a cue from a girl who once told me at a party that Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind was her, through and through, which I found so, so sad, I can say Vertigo is me. Equally sad.
3. Downloading new music, new albums.
4. Looking for Logos, finding everything else. Some good, some bad.
5. I’d love to post a youtube link (at least) to Faith No More’s video for “Last Cup Of Sorrow,” the lead single to their Album Of The Year, which features Jennifer Jason Leigh and essentially remakes Vertigo rather… interestingly. Alas, I can’t find it. Sorry.
6. There’s that Harvey Danger song called “Carlotta Valdez,” when tying music into film, especially this film, is equally important.
7. I’ve been to San Francisco countless times in my life. In a lot of ways, it was the second city I lived in when I was in California, even though I never lived there.
8. Speaking of Vertigo and San Francisco, I was recommending Chris Marker’s Sans Soleil to someone the other day, the same as I’m recommending it to you (again) now.
9. Whenever I go to SF anymore, I always remember this line said by the villain of Vertigo, “The things that spell San Francisco to me are disappearing fast..I should have liked to have lived here then - color, excitement, power, freedom.”
10. This is one of those nights, you know? Ruminating on music and film, as a kind of metaphor for dwelling in the past. And curious what to do with yourself when the sun comes up. Ugh, the fucking sun.
